PURE-Matte Light TaupeYour guide to the right seat pad
A comfortable sitting posture is the basis for our mediation. Before beginning the meditation, you should find a comfortable sitting position that you can comfortably sit in for ten minutes. A comfortable meditation cushion supports you.
Why a meditation cushion?
Many of us find meditation difficult at first. The mind is restless and it is difficult for us to sit still and find rest. If there is still pinching because the back hurts or we force ourselves into a sitting position that is too advanced, the mind cannot come to rest.
Note : Your seat (whether on the floor, a chair, or leaning against a wall) should never cause pain, and your lower back should always be upright.
A seat or yoga cushion automatically helps you to sit more comfortably. It relieves the spine and the entire back. Above all, it ensures a natural straightening of the spine, so that we do not sag so easily. This creates more space in the abdominal area and our breath can flow more freely and deeply.
Once you have found a sitting position, you should remain comfortable in it. But especially as a beginner, you will become aware of your body during a longer meditation. Then do not hesitate, but bring movement to the painful parts of the body. For example, gently relax your legs and then return to the seat.
How do I find a suitable meditation cushion?
The most important criterion for buying a suitable cushion is yourself. True to the motto "How you cushion yourself, so you meditate" , the right meditation cushion can be one of the decisive factors in ensuring that meditation is perceived as pleasant and harmonious. Each of us has our own feeling when it comes to the seat. This feeling is related to the flexibility of the body on the one hand and the opening of the hips and back on the other.
The right pillow should support you in an upright and straight posture , relieve your pelvis and spine and create space to calm your thoughts. Your mind should not be occupied with thigh pain, hip problems or your back during meditation, but should come to rest.
There are no criteria that apply equally to all meditators. Nevertheless, there are a few points that you can consider when choosing the right meditation cushion.
- pillow height
- pillow shape
- sitting position
- cushion filling
- pillow color
- Area of application (meditation, yoga, sitting, therapy)
If you keep these points in mind, you will soon realize how useful a good meditation cushion can be!
the right height
Body size, flexibility and the area of application are decisive for the height of the meditation cushion. At Lotuscrafts, we divide our meditation cushions into three different size categories:
- Small: approx. 10 cm seat height
- Standard: approx. 15 cm seat height
- High: approx. 20 cm seat height
We recommend a cushion in the "Small" category with a seat height of approx. 10 cm if you are approx. 1.70 m tall and can sit comfortably in the cross-legged or lotus position and on your heels. You should also have high hip flexibility (hip opening) and your knees should be healthy and resilient. By the way: Small pillows like these are also a good help if you take it easy with yoga and don't want to or can't stretch too far.
The "Standard" category is suitable if you are looking for a versatile cushion with a normal seat height and, for example, have slightly longer legs, but still want to sit cross-legged. The seat height of approx. 15 cm is ideal if you are over 1.70 m tall or have problems with your leg muscles, hip joints or knees. If you meditate for a long time, you can change your sitting position more easily and frequently with the standard cushion. The pillow height is also ideal for the kneeling position, where the pillow is between the legs. The knees are in front, the lower legs are on the floor and the feet are pointing backwards.
We recommend the "High" category if you have very long legs, are over 1.80 m tall , want to sit cross-legged and have less hip flexibility. This seat height is also well suited if you have problems with your leg muscles, hip joints or knees and prefer the kneeling position. Since you sit higher with this pillow, it is also easier for you to get up here. The cushion is also well suited as a flexible, slightly higher seat for therapy and seminar rooms.
The right shape
In meditation you bring your body and mind into harmony and find peace. Your seat pad should support you, you should hardly notice it, so that you can concentrate fully on yourself and your practice. Ideally, the material of the filling adapts ergonomically to your body shape.
The Lotuscrafts round cushions have a circular seat and thus support an upright and correct sitting posture. You can use these cushions for different sitting positions . The pillows are all produced according to high social and ecological standards and are GOTS-certified. This means that we pay attention to environmentally friendly processes, health-friendly materials and social standards at every work step. This is important to us, because our products should not harm anyone.
The heat-treated and particularly light organic spelled husks (kbA) with which the cushions are filled adapt ideally to your sitting position and support a comfortable posture in which you can linger for a long time. Gradually your body relaxes and your mind comes to rest.
You can use the organic cotton cushions as a meditation cushion for your meditation room , as a seat cushion in the living room, in the therapy room or for your yoga studio.
We currently have these pillow shapes in our range:
The comfortable filling
Our meditation and yoga cushions are carefully filled with organic spelled husks in our workshop.
Spelled husks are the shell of the spelled grain and are prepared accordingly to become "meditation cushion filling". First the grain is removed, then the husks are washed, dried and dusted. This ensures hygiene and a long service life.
Why spelled husks?
We chose spelled husks as filling material for several reasons:
- Spelled husks are pleasantly soft, dimensionally stable and adaptable . That's why the cushions from Lotuscrafts easily adapt to the selected seating position.
- Spelled husks are robust , balance temperature and humidity, and the filling usually does not need to be replaced. It is enough if you shake up and air the meditation cushions from time to time.
- Spelled husks are light . That's why the shipping costs are minimized and the transport of the meditation cushions is hardly significant.
- Spelled husks can be substituted . If the filling has to be replaced, spelled husks can be bought cheaply and refilled easily.
- Spelled husks can be replaced and can return to the natural nutrient cycle in an environmentally friendly way .
- Spelled husks smell good. That's why we look forward to the fresh "grainy" scent that greets us every day when we enter our workshop.
Kapok is obtained from the pods of the kapok tree. The cotton-like plant fiber is particularly suitable as a filling if you want a soft and crushable pillow. Kapok is also ideal for allergy sufferers, as this plant fiber hardly attracts mites and is very breathable.
